The Beautiful Huawei Mate 10 Pro Review

Huawei Mate 10 Pro

Huawei Mate 10 ProThe Huawei smartphones boast of commanding a big share of the market and this is mainly due to two things:

  • Long life battery
  • A bigger screen
  • Premium design

This phone tries to strike a balance between being a good value for money and offering a top-notch experience, this phone is the first Chinese firms’ first winner. The front is all screen with thin bezels at the top and the bottom sections which makes it a rival with the Samsung models but without the curved screen.

  • It looks great with the elongated ratio 6-inch full HD + OLED screen
  • The resolution is not as high as the competitors
  • Not at lovely as the Samsung model
  • Rich in colour
  • Wide viewing angles

It feels great in the hand with the curved black glass and metal sides. The metal band around the sides meets the curved glass black which makes it feels incredibly solid and ergonomic in the hand for a large smartphone. The mocha brown colour makes it extremely attractive.

  • The mate 10 pro matches Google’s pixel 2 XL at 7.9mm thick
  • It’s 0.2mm thinner compared to Samsung Galaxy S8+
  • All three phones are similar weight: Mate is 178g, Pixel 2 XL 175g and Galaxy S8+ 173g.

The water resistant is IP67 standard, this mean up to 1m of water for up to 30 minutes. This is enough to survive swimming in the loo or bath for half an hour.

The phone can be sued as a remote control with the IR port for Tv and other stuff. Huawei stands out because it’s one of the few companies that manufactures its own processor and chips just like Samsung and Apple. The Mate 10 Pro has Huawei’s new Kirin 970 Octo – core processor which, is more powerful and efficient than the previous generations.

It also has a new “neural network processing unit” this is the latest technology with Apple and Samsung and bunding some form of 1 processor in their new smart phones. The phone is snappy for the day to day activities. Apps, even the games loaded faster than most competitors, switching between apps was instant. Unlocking the device and getting into action is quite fast indeed.

The Huawei has an excellent fingerprint scanner at the back, which is undoubtedly the best in the business for the performance of a smartphone. The phone does predict if you’re about to launch an app and clean your system with the promise that the phone will perform better on day 1 as well as day 365. This is a bit difficult to proof, we just must believe until proven otherwise.

The battery will last for two days between charges, it could be switched on 7am one day and the battery runs out of the last juice at 9am on the third day which means lasting up to 50 hours without the assistance of power saving mode. Some other phones have only survived for 30 hours.

A breakdown of how the battery last longer:

  • Browsing and using apps in five hours
  • Sending 100s or emails and text messages
  • 60 minutes of Netflix
  • Listen to music for five hours via Bluetooth

It charges quite quickly, reaching just under 60% under 30 minutes, the only downside is, it’s not compatible with wireless charging.

EMUI 8

The standard Android experience was modified to create what it calls emotion UI. The Mate 10 Pro runs the new EMUI 8 based on Android 8 Oreo, this makes it one of the first new devices to be released running the latest and greatest version of Android.

EMUI 8 is the most refined version with lots of theme options and settings like Apple’s IOS with every app icon on the home screen. You can turn off the Google feed which sits at the left part of the home screen pane which you can switch off. Google’s new adaptive icons that look around for apps that have been updated is also included and various wallpapers to choose from.

The Huawei eye comfort mode is the option to reduce the blue light to reduce eye strain and help to get some sleep at night. This can be scheduled for a specific time, there’s also an option to turn the interface to black which is like night mode in some app for saving power. It’s compatible with the default user interface and Huawei apps, but not third-party apps.

There are series of power saving modes on offer in EMUI 8 which works very well. It could be the general monitoring of any rogue apps that might try to destroy the battery’s life or the ultra-power saving mode. These disables some of the functions and limits the numbers of apps you can use to extend the battery’s life.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro – Cameras

A third generation of Leica branded dual camera which is far better compared to the company’s previous efforts. You will find on the back of the camera:

  • 12- megapixel colour camera
  • Image stabilisation
  • 20-megapixel monochrome camera
  • Each camera has a fast f/1.6 lenses

The two cameras function together to produce accurate detail and light in colour scenes. This also creates a hybrid two-times zoom that works in all except worse lighting conditions. The systematic mode needs to be checked to ensure that some photos are not over exposed in good lighting conditions. The neural processor is used to run fast object recognition for:

  • Scene selection
  • To detect anything from text to food to flowers
  • To optimise the camera for the shot.

The phone produces all round great shots, but not as detailed as the Google’s
pixel 2 smartphones. The lack of automatic HDR is also a slip in the normal point and shoot mode. The greatest feature and modes built into the camera does compensate for the shortfall.

Manual controls for everything comes with the pro mode and there are also other very useful creative modes from light painting to 3D panorama. You cannot go wrong with the 8-megapixel selfie camera.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro – More

  • The IR blaster can control your TV
  • It has a 4.2 Bluetooth support instead of 5. There is also audio support such as: ApX/apX HD and LDAC HD.
  • Connect your phone to a monitor with a standard USB-C to display port or similar cables. This can be connected to a keyboard and a mouse and turn into a desktop computer.
  • The glass at the back is a bit gripping but not a problem with the fingerprints
  • A screen protector fitted, and a soft plastic case is added as an additional
  • Lack of headphone socket is a little bit disappointing
